Fun Water Facts

Per Suzanne Gautier at San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, The Lombard Reservoir at George Sterling Park:

was built in 1860
has a capacity of 2.7 million gallons
contains Hetch Hetchy system water, a blend of water from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, and reservoirs in San Mateo and Alameda Counties
contains water that is treated and potable
is treated at Harry Tracy or the Sunol treatment plant – depending on the source
water leaves the reservoir and goes directly to customer taps
serves a small area in primarily North Beach, the water is distributed by gravity

She didn't know how many gallons per day go out of the reservoir, but said in San Francisco average residential use is about 57 gallons per day. I asked her if she had a ballpark guess of how many customers, but she hasn't responded.

She also said landscaping and irrigation at the park is under the control of the PUC, and stormwater runoff from the tennis courts goes directly into the storm drain for treatment at the wastewater treatment plant

It looks like we have about 400,000 gallons a year to work with, although a lot of it comes in the winter.
